Larry Carlton Masterclass

The Wishaw Music Centre are delighted to present Nineteen-time Grammy nominee, Four-time Grammy winner and all-time guitar great, Larry Carlton in this exclusive Scottish guitar masterclass.

Larry possesses an extraordinary capacity to communicate both the freedom and technical aspects of playing the blues. Merging art and science, Larry shares with his audience the philosophical, mechanical, and musical approach to a genre rich in expression and improvisation.

Throughout his masterclass, Larry focuses on his love of blues and jazz, and helps his audience to explore the different approaches to comping and soloing over choruses, as well as how to support a solo musically and develop personal solos. His goal during the masterclass is to help players better understand improvisation, rhythm playing, and soloing skills to help each attendee find his or her own voice.

Larry’s masterclass offers a rare opportunity for students not only to understand a top professional and his techniques, experiences and history, but to gain personal knowledge about the world of music through a living legend’s eyes. His main objective in this class is to share his knowledge and experience with the wonderful guitar fans of Scotland.

With over 3,000 sessions, 200 hit records and 100 gold albums to his credit, Carlton has his fingerprints indelibly imprinted on virtually every genre of music. Larry also brings with him his own extensive collection of solo records spanning over 30 albums.

He uses his recordings as a tool to communicate different techniques, as well as to give his audience greater insight to each song and its history.

In an attempt to better connect with his audience, Larry keeps the session open with opportunities to ask questions and communicate candidly. His students are encouraged to delve deeper into all the different aspects of playing and to take advantage of having an established teacher like Larry at their disposal to help better their craft.

The Essential Guide to Electric Guitar Technique
with Shaun Baxter

Due to popular demand, the Wishaw Music Centre are delighted to welcome back the legend that is Shaun Baxter for a very exclusive masterclass on guitar technique.

Shaun Baxter is the World's most experienced and respected electric guitar teacher. A founder member of the Guitar Institute in 1986, Shaun has influenced generations of guitarists for over 30 years as an active professional guitarist, educator and journalist; and is currently owner and Academic Director of the biggest network of music schools in the UK, The Academy of Music and Sound.

In this exclusive masterclass, Shaun will outline the essential principles of electric guitar technique (as well as outlining the various pitfalls) in a level of detail and clarity not available from other teachers.

Furthermore, he is open to question on any part of his personal approach to improvisation, and will be performing with the house band in the evening.

Take your understanding of the mechanics of developing virtuoso rock technique to the next level, allowing you to convey your musical ideas with more accuracy, control and efficiency, and to present them in ways that maximise their power and excitement.

Tom Quayle and Martin Miller Dual Masterclass

The Wishaw Music Centre are delighted to present two of the hottest players around in an amazing dual masterclass!

Tom Quayle is one of the finest players the UK has to offer. A highly respected educator, Tom has become an authority on jazz/fusion playing and his instructional DVD's and downloadsare some of the most popular available today.

Tom has played and taught all over the world and in 2013 he was one of the instructors at Dweezilla which was a guitar instructional camp hosted by Dweezil Zappa.Tom is also a regular columnist for Guitar Interactive Magazine and has released a number of instructional DVD's with Lick Library.

Tom is one of the tastiest players you are going to hear and his skills as an improviser must be heard to be believed!

Martin Miller is a German guitar player who has been making a splash in the guitar scene over the last few years. Martin is another highly respected educator who regularly releases packages with Jam Track Central.

Martin has a successful solo album release called 'The Other End' where you can hear his highly original guitar playing and songwriting. Whether he is playing complex bebop or balls to the wall metal, Martin's playing is sure to make your jaw drop!

This class is going to make you a better player. Two world class players, teachers and stand up guys revealing their approach to guitar playing in an intimate setting.

They will be sharing their unique perspectives and unveiling their own personal styles. Attendees will also be encouraged to ask their own questions and the guys will be more than happy to help you.

After the class is finished, Tom and Martin will perform a duo set in the local pub and you can see them performing live with the house band. Entry is included in the ticket price.

Christophe Godin Masterclass

The Wishaw Music Centre are delighted to present French guitar virtuoso Christophe Godin for a very special masterclass in June. This class will be held in The Corinthian Club in Glasgow's City Centre.

Born in 1968, Christophe Godin is a guitarist from France playing multiple styles of music. Christophe is known for his releases with Mörglbl, Gnô and Metal Kartoon.

Apart from his awesome technique, Christophe is a talented composer, an entertaining performer and a humorous character.Considered as one of todays best rock guitarists (voted 4th best guitarist by Guitar Part), he is also an in demand clinician, as well as a busy international ambassador for such brands as Vigier guitars, Godin guitars, Laney amps, Zoom effects, and Palmer products.

He also collaborates with various magazines - Guitar Part, UK Guitarist and Guitar Techniques. Christophe tours all around the world spreading the word of the Kartoon Guitar, often teaming up onstage with long time friends Mattias Eklundh (Freak Kitchen), Ron Thal (Guns 'n' Roses), Kiko Loureiro (Angra) and Guthrie Govan.

An Evening with Stu Hamm


Amped Promotions and Wishaw Music Centre are proud to present
Stu Hamm in an exclusive Scottish clinic/performance.

Hosted in the classy, intimate atmosphere of The Corinthian Club, this is a rare chance to spend an evening in the company of a true legend.

Watch as Stu demonstrates and explains may of the techniques and styles he is famous for. You will have the chance to ask Stu anything and there will be a a meet and greet afterwards. Stu is most famous for being the bassist of choice for some of the world's greatest guitarists including Steve Vai and Joe Satriani so this event is not just for the bassists.

A Freak Guitar Masterclass with Mattias IA Eklundh


Wishaw Music Centre are delighted to present Mattias IA Eklundh in an exclusive all day guitar workshop.

Mattias is the singer,guitarist and songwriter for the Swedish band Freak Kitchen. He also runs the annual guitar camp, Freak Guitar Camp in Sweden. In March, Mattias will be bringing his own blend of 'freak' guitar to Wishaw for an exclusive Freak Guitar Masterclass that you don't want to miss!

You will have the chance to spend the whole day in a small classroom environment with one of the best guitarists on the planet. Learn all about his signature style and his approach to the guitar and ask him anything. Chances like this are very rare!

Mr Fastfinger: Expressive Lead Guitar


Wishaw Music Centre were delighted to present Mr Fastfinger
(Mika Tyyska) in an exclusive all day guitar workshop.

The class was titled Expressive Lead Guitarand 15 lucky guitar students spent the day with Mika learning about this all important and often overlooked aspect of guitar playing.

Mika showed you how to master the fretboard in the shortest possible time and then how to turn that knowledge into actual music!

The class covered:

  • Fretboard Mastery - Learn a simple 3 step method of learning the guitar fretboard.
  • Signature Techniques
  • Improvisational Tools
  • Expression & Feel - How to turn notes into actual music and more!

This was a fantastic day and it was also our last workshop of the year. Afterwards we had a fantastic gig in Girdwoods Lounge where Mika played an outstanding solo set and got up for a jam with the WGL house band as well as special guests Andrew Richens, Neil Mellor and Stephen Maxwell.Stay tuned for live footage!

An Essential Guide to Playing Through Changes with Shaun Baxter

Wishaw Music Centre in partnership with Zivory Custom Guitars were delighted to present the world renowned guitar player and instructor Shaun Baxter for one day only on September 7th 2013.

Shaun's name is synonymous with guitar playing in the UK and anyone who has ever picked up Guitar Techniques magazine will recognize the huge gift he has given to the guitar world with his monthly Creative Rock column which has been running since 1994.

Shaun co-founded the Guitar Institute in London back in 1986, where he taught for over 20 years, as well as at the London College of Music. He has also been Head of Guitar at Guitar X, and is now an owner and Academic Director of the Academy of Music and Sound, the biggest network of instrument-specific popular music schools in the UK, which already has 8 centers up and down England and Scotland.

Shaun is also notorious for his groundbreaking album Jazz Metal which was released back in 1993 and it is a tour de force of hi-tech guitar wizardry! A master of technique, theory and style; Shaun's exclusive Scottish masterclass is not to be missed! The focus of Shauns class was on playing over changes.

Alex Hutchings Masterclass

Alex Hutchings is one of the top players in the world right now and Wishaw Guitar Lessons were delighted to have him give an exciting master class followed by some mindblowing performances with the Wishaw Guitar Lessons house band, Chunga's Revenge.

Alex gave a loose, audience directed master class which was a fantastic way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Alex covered many topics including technique, theory, touring, improvising but most of all this day was about finding out what kind of personality lies behind the outrageous playing skill that Alex possesses.

George Marios Masterclass

Lick Library artist and Guitar Idol 2009 Finalist, George Marios , delivered a fantastic masterclass at Wishaw Guitar Lessons on Saturday 23rd February 2013. George covered many topics including:

  • Phrasing-Developing melodic awareness through limitation.
  • Developing Hybrid Picking-Development of the trademark intervallic style.
  • Melodic Variations over static platforms/progressions.
  • Working in the studio-A brief guide to session musicianship.
  • Creating exciting lines-Breaking away from cliches.
  • Q & A - Ask George anything about guitar playing and take this opportunity to learn from a virtuoso.

The masterclass was highly interactive with students being encouraged to plug in and play with George and the other attendees. All attendees recieved the materials used throughout the class in PDF format as well as a copy of his 2009 album, 'Between Two Worlds'. George also performed live in the evening with the Wishaw Guitar Lesson's house band, Chunga's Revenge! Keep your eyes peeled for footage!

Bass Day Workshop

Then this 'Bass Day' workshop in Wishaw will be the perfect event for you Hosted by our resident bass tutor, David Lennon - and held at our Main Street studio - the day will entail all things Bass related. Whether you are thinking of learning a new instrument, transferring your already existing guitar skills across to the bass guitar, looking for tips/advice on learning a new style, or just curious, David will ensure that you reach your goal You will have the opportunity to meet other players and interact with them, and there will also be a chance to showcase your talents to the group at the end of the day!

Rick Graham Masterclass

Guitarist Magazine's 'Guitarist of the Year 2011', Rick Graham , gave 15 lucky students a full day's masterclass straight from our studio on Wishaw Main Street.

Rick covered many topics with an emphasis on his approach to improvisation. Each student recieved a complimentary copy of his album, Insideout along with all teaching materials from the day and more.

Rick's teaching methods are in demand from publications such as iGuitar magazine as well as the wildly popular Lick Library website and it was an absolute honour to have him come and spend the day at Wishaw Guitar Lessons. Afterwards, we hosted an evening of live music in Girdwoods lounge where our band, Chunga's Revenge were delighted to share the stage with Rick Graham, Mark Mcguigan and Lyle Watt for some fun jamming! We also got local guitar student Jim Findlay up to jam with the band. Jim is 65 and has been playing only 3 years and we were delighted to share the experience with him!

What Mark Mcguigan had to say about the day - "Another great masterclass at Wishaw Guitar Lessons, who again have managed to bring the World's best players to share their knowledge and craft for our benefit!" Yamaha Music School educator, Rowan J Parker (www.rowanjparker.com)had this to say - "Rick Graham's workshop was exceptional. both for it's content and the relaxed and engaging way Rick presented it. It was highly interactive as well, with the participants given ample opportunity to try out the concepts that were explained. All the attendees were given a pile of extra material on DVD to take away as well, making this a thoroughly worthwhile day."

Tom Quayle Masterclass

Leeds guitar sensation, Tom Quayle (www.tomquayle.co.uk) travelled all the way to Wishaw to give 10 lucky students an all day masterclass.

From 10am to 4.30pm, Tom covered many topics and lifted the lid on his own thought processes when playing.

Invaluable lessons from a true master and an all round nice guy.

After the masterclass, Tom formally opened Wishaw Guitar Lesson's new premises on the Main Street in Wishaw.

Glenfiddich were on hand to host a nosing and tasting session which went down a treat.

We also raised over £400 for Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust on behalf of Wishaw resident, Donna Warnock.

Glenfiddich donated a few bottles for the raffle and helped raise this money!

Easter Weekend Guitar Extravaganza

Our first ever event was the Easter Weekend Guitar Extravaganza which took place in The Commercial Hotel, Wishaw. The event ran on the 7th and 8th of April 2012 and featured workshops from 8 great teachers. The workshops were interspersed with live music and interactive student activities.

Review of the event by Laura Millar - "Andy, just wanted to say well done and thanks for really enjoyable and informative weekend at the Guitar Extravaganza. The standard of the workshops and demos were truly first class. All of the tutors were hugely knowledgable and had the ability to encourge and inspire. Each of the attendees I spoke to had taken something from the sessions whether they were beginners or had been playing for 20 years. Looking forward to next years!"

Review of the event by Stuart Ferguson - "Great weekend of lessons and a very low pressure environment. Excellent teachers who were willing to listen as well as talk and were very approachable. If you didn't understand something or wanted to know more they where more than happy to take you to one side and go over whatever was troubling you.
